Certificate in Technology Enhanced Teaching

A blended professional development programme developed in collaboration with the Center for Educational Innovation & Digital Learning at Lamar University in the United States.

The Professional Development of your teaching staff is key in ensuring you get the very best return on investment in the deployment of technology across your institution. Not only do teaching staff gain a better understanding of what the technology has to offer, but also on how to capitalise on the use of modern tools such as Office 365 and others to enhance their teaching practice.

This ‘Certificate in Technology Enhanced Teaching’ offers teaching staff a short comprehensive professional development programme the outcome of which rewards staff with a certificate which can be converted into academic credit towards a Lamar or participating university Masters Programme. The programme consists of two elements:

Part One: The completion of 4 x Half-Day Face to Face workshops delivered by fully qualified Tablet Academy consultants and supported by online resources. These workshops can be customised to meet the needs of your institution and based on your technology deployment. Tablet Academy consultants are fully endorsed by Lamar University to run the programme.

Part Two: The creation by participating staff of an ePortfolio of evidence demonstrating the use of technology in their teaching practice.

Assessment: After grading of the ePortfolio by a University Faculty member, successful participants are awarded a non-credit bearing certificate which can, at a later date, be converted into full academic credits, representing 1/6th towards the Lamar University online M.Ed. in Digital Learning and Leading or other participating university post-graduate programme.

Workshop Curriculum

The Certificate in Technology Enhanced Teaching programme consists of 4 half-day face-to-face workshops delivered by a qualified Tablet Academy consultant. The curriculum is fixed but content can be customised to suit the needs and technology deployment of your institution.
Students learn by connecting new knowledge with knowledge and concepts that they already know, thereby constructing new meanings. Research suggests that students connect knowledge most effectively in active social classrooms, where they negotiate understanding through interaction and varied approaches. Educators should be aware that students, as novice learners, often possess less developed or incomplete conceptual frameworks. As a result, it may take time to learn how to “chunk” knowledge into similar, retrievable categories, grow larger conceptual ideas, and interconnect ideas. They may also harbour misconceptions or erroneous ways of thinking, which can limit or weaken connections with new knowledge. Educators can build approaches using technology that help students develop and learn pathways to becoming expert learners whose conceptual frameworks are deeply interconnected, transferable, rooted in a solid memory and skills foundation, and easily retrieved. Students build strong conceptual frameworks when educators: help them assess and clarify prior knowledge; facilitate social environments through active learning activities that interconnect ideas and vary approaches to knowledge; and invite students to reflect, co-build course road maps, and pursue other forms of metacognition. This workshop explores the concepts and tools required in the research and construction of knowledge and how such tools can assist educators in new ways of helping students construct knowledge pathways.
Great communication between students and teachers is the cornerstone of the best educational relationships. The best educators are marked by how well they communicate information to their students and how well they create feedback and debate mechanisms to ensure that a free-flowing stream of ideas and questions is always active between learner and educator. With the advent of the range of current education technology, a wealth of brilliant new tools present themselves to the modern educator to stay effectively connected to students at all times and in a myriad of exciting different ways. This workshop explores a range of methodologies and tools available for the communication of knowledge and ideas. It covers the use of simple tools such as presentation through to more complex form of concept expression.
Today’s technology offers so many options for educators and students to collaborate that deciding on where to begin can be overwhelming. There are many new approachs that could be the catalyst for positive change in the classroom. This workshop looks at what could benefit your students the most in terms of classroom collaboration. Educators need to hear from students, and we know that asking questions or calling on students to discuss a topic can often make them nervous. When students, or anyone, develop that feeling of “being on the spot”, it can become more difficult to encourage students to share what they are thinking, what they are feeling and what their true opinions are. This is where digital tools can provide security and opportunities for students to express themselves. Technology has a true purpose. Students still need to develop the ability–and confidence–to speak in class. This workshop will also explore how these tools can help by providing a comfortable way for students to develop their voice and express themselves.
Through assessment, educators check student understanding, get valuable data on student learning, and use that data to modify instruction. When teachers know what students know (or don’t know), they can adjust the content and/or their teaching style or use of technology to meet students right at their level. The best assessment tools also help students self-reflect and assess, calculating where they are and where they need to go as learners. This workshop will explore a range of technologies that can assist in delivering assessment, gathering data and analysing the results.

Can I take the Lamar University Certificate without face to face tuition?

The Certificate in Technology Enhanced Teaching can be achieved without the need to attend face to face workshops (although these are recomended) by taking a series of MICROSOFT ONLINE SELF STUDY COURSES. Institutions can apply for a Tablet Academy Scholarship to provide access to the programme for all teaching staff free of charge but please note that this route provides NO Face To Face Tuition or Support.
